Research
My art is often based on research. The central core of my work has been “Japanese” identity issued from migration. I am interested in migrating objects, such as waste from the sea, family photographs, textiles, porcelain, Ukiyo-e *(Yokohama-ga, Nagasaki-ga) & Shun-ga* (especially where people from different countries are portrayed). These objects reflect people’s lives from history and the present time.
I read historical information about the relationship between Japan and other countries, in order to learn about my own heritage, and also to look at these encounters and relate this to the contemporary public.
Since 2014, I have been researching sexuality, pornography and objectification.
Currently, I began researching on historical relationship between Holland and Japan, especially in Delft ceramics.
I am also reading about slave trade in Japan with Portugal from 16th century.
*Ukiyo-e (Japanese: 浮世絵, pronounced [ɯkʲijoꜜe]; literally "picture[s] of the Floating World") are woodblock prints, a genre of Japanese art which flourished
from the 17th through 19th centuries.
*Shunga (春画) is a Japanese term for erotic art. Most shunga are a type of ukiyo-e, usually executed in woodblock print format.
While rare, there are extant erotic painted handscrolls which predate ukiyo-e.
Translated literally, the Japanese word shunga means picture of spring; "spring" is a common euphemism for sex.
