Gratittude 2017
Gratitude is rooted in my experience with the deaths of two people close to me: my mother and
a dear friend.
At my mother's funeral, the priest compared an individual’s life to stained glass. Some experiences, he said, could be seen as stains—unpleasant, difficult, or mixed with suffering. Yet, when we look at the stained glass as a whole, the view transforms. The light and shadow play together, creating something greater than the sum of its parts—this reflects the entirety of a person’s life.
My triptych embodies this idea, celebrating life and the ever-changing light. It reflects the presence of a spirit or ghost in the shadows, the transparency of light, and the fading of memories within the body. These are bodies we could touch, yet never had the chance to say goodbye to. Death, in this sense, is like the moment when stained glass is completed—the final portrait of a life.
