Combat Manual for daily survival, photograph, silk screen on flag, unique piece, 228 x 266 cm, 2010

The residency began with the idea of making a class photographs.
I knew that one of the final work " class photo" to be based on the idea of my work "Combat, Manual for daily survival" .
Combat is a work that deals with fabrics representing the surrounding of our daily life. Here I decided to use the French flag for this reason.
Since the last few years, I have been working on the idea of national flag (can be seen in Blond ambition , work with teenagers )in the terms of relationship between nation and individual as a prolongation to relationship between individual and society.
Though this work, i attempt to questions the relationships we have to a country where we live.
Despite our origins, we live in this country and we are daily transforming the country by our presence.
Every civilization developed through the movements and mixture of diverse people.
I decided to keep the liner structure of class photo as it represents the idea of school, social structure and an idea of relationship between people that creates the society.

In Combat, black represents our personal space.
During the residency, I came in contact with silk screen and I rediscovered the notion of presenting "negative" in an image.
In photographic terms, negative make the image visible with exposure of light. I liked the idea and decided to use it as part of the work.

The hand gesture represents what helps each person's to live daily.
Each person is in rectangular frame takes over the whole space and they link and cross within the tricolor .
The form of the original flag was adapted to individual/collective space, rather than individual/collective space adapting to the form of the flag.

I wish this work can be a space for the viewer to question or open a dialogue concerning our relationships with where we live , how we relate to ourselves and others, and how we would like to live.

Class photo 2:  Combat, Manual for daily survival

Individual combat : 19 x 24 cm, photograph, transfer on printed fabric, unique piece

This class photo is constructed in 26 individual transfer pieces.
In the frame work of "Combat
participants (students and adults) gave the hand gestures that helps them to live daily with intention to share them with with others.
Normally, the photography are taken in the i.d. photo booth by subjects themselves, but this time i took the photographs for the reason of organization.
At beginning, participants were shy and somewhere distracted by presence of other people. But
as it was shot in digital camera, we were able to take many frames that gave students more time to get into their gestures.
From my last experience of working with students, i realized that it was not the best solution to ask each students to bring their textiles, because not all of them have the same notion and understanding to what printed fabric represents in Combat.
I introduced to  the other works of combat to explain that the fabric pattern symbolizes our daily context,
I brought the textiles from my house and asked them to choose what corresponded to their surrounding. (They were also welcomed to bring their own textiles if there was something that they would like to use.)

The complexity in choosing the textile were finding a good combination with their combat portrait. some students choose the fabric that they liked but did not consider the result in whole and others knew what they wanted for precises reasons and projected further in the final results. Some of the students choose the same textiles because they did not want to be "out" of the group.

Some textiles were gone with the actual transfer therefore i made a new interpretation which are shown here.

I think this is a very realistic class photo as in many ways each individual expresses their own world by making individual choices, affirming themselves and welcoming the others to their world.

Class photo 3 : Phrase

Picture

I asked each students to write a phrase that accompany their combat images. Similar reaction, some had thought about the text, and came up with personal ideas, others too afraid to express the real phrase because of the peer pressure, in some case they still believe there is the right answer to my request, and the worst cases they simply could not bother to think about it. These phrase will be printed on the back of  each combat t-shirt that is planned to be used during a performance in March.
